We’re Not Going Back

Written by Boff Whalley

75 Mines.

3 Sisters.

1 Cause.

(And a six-pack of Babycham)

We’re Not Going Back is about the 1984/85 miners’ strike… more or less.

But in this hard-hitting musical comedy there are no miners. Instead, we follow the fortunes of three sisters in a pit village, hit hard by the Government’s war against the miners and determined to set up a branch of Women Against Pit Closures.

Olive, Mary and Isabel are like any other sisters whose everyday squabbles became a background hum to a strike that forces them to question their lives, their relationships and their family ties.

This strike wasn’t just a battle fought out between pickets, police, politicians and public opinion. It was as much a battle in the homes and families of those fighting for their communities.

We’re Not Going Back tackles the resilience of working communities, the make-and-mend fabric of family and the power of sticking two fingers up to a government hell-bent on destruction… and all with humour, song and that six-pack of Babycham.

Find out more about Red Ladder

Red Ladder is a radical theatre company with 45 years of history; acknowledged as one of Britain’s leading national touring companies producing high quality new theatre, contributing to social change and global justice.

Founded in 1968 in London, the company has a colourful history rooted in the radical socialist theatre movement in Britain known as agitprop. Born into an era of riots, demonstrations and revolts, Red Ladder has grown up, kicking and screaming, into the 21st Century, where it continues to fight, to entertain, and to agitate in as equal measures as possible.

Red Ladder exists to create theatre about and around human struggle. To do this, our work must be galvanising and stimulating; generous and life affirming ; collaborative and visionary ; fearless; of and for many people.

We seek to redefine and reclaim notions of popular, political and radical in a theatre context, and place politics and accessibility as twin and complementary facets of a people’s theatre.
