17 The Moor, Sheffield

Established in October 2014, the former (and beloved) Woolworths store located on The Moor in the centre of Sheffield was the first pop-up creative hub under the Theatre Deli brand to appear outside of London. Originally signed on to run as an experiment on a nine month lease soon became a near three year venture and the start of a continuous 7 year partnership between Theatre Deli and Aberdeen Standard.

Spread over the 3 floors of this 16,152 square ft retail building, Moor Deli comprised of:

• 10 dedicated rehearsal rooms, offered to artists at minimum cost

• 2 performances studio spaces, including a 1000-seat black box studio theatre

• A ground floor open cafe for artists and the general public

The building also housed space (predominately in the ground floor cafe) for community groups and charities to host regular workshops and events to further integrate the general public with the arts and community support networks within the city, the first such venue of its kind in Sheffield.

Theatre Deli’s first major theatre event outside of London. It featured 10 pieces of immersive performance by emerging artists, hosting daily shows for over 3 weeks attracting attention from local and mainstream media and featured in Lyn Gardener’s top theatre recommendations in the Guardian newspaper.

“Just got home from our second visit to Horror Souk. I fully recommend going, we were lucky to see most performances. The only one we missed was 'RAT Homicide' but the ones we saw were fantastic though, especially 'Sunny Meadows' (which we saw twice). Please do something similar next year or soon. "We were very lucky to be given permission to use the space upstairs for collection for clothing and items to take across to the Calais Refugee Camps (we also had a collection point in the cafe downstairs), we had nearly the whole of the first floor full of donations which a team of volunteers sorted and packed up (items unsuitable for Calais, and there were lots, went to the local hospice charity for sale in their shops)" - August/September 2015
